Alex Sobel MP met with Jet2.com and Jet2holidays this week, where he learned about the size and scale of our operation and also heard about our industry-leading campaigns to tackle disruptive passenger behaviour and the number of fraudulent sickness claims made by British holidaymakers.

Mr Sobel is the MP for Leeds North West, with his constituency covering Leeds Bradford Airport, our first ever UK base from where we now operate to 53 sun, city and ski destinations.

He met with Phil Ward, Managing Director of Jet2.com and Ian Day, Group Legal Director, who took him on a tour of Low Fare Finder House at the airport, where many of our operational teams are based. Jet2.com and Jet2holidays employs more than 2,500 people in the Leeds area, so Mr Sobel was able to hear more about our contribution to the local economy as well as see the scale of our operation on one of our busiest days of the year.

Mr Sobel also heard how Jet2.com has taken a proactive stance in tackling the issue of disruptive passenger behaviour, and was briefed on the role that alcohol often plays in such incidents which can subsequently impact both our customers and crew on board. Phil Ward talked about how Jet2.com is leading the industry in tackling the issue through our Onboard Together campaign, and the practical steps that both industry and the Government can take to tackle the problem.

The subject of false sickness claims was also discussed. Jet2holidays has led the way in campaigning to raise awareness and clamp down on fraudulent sickness claims, including hiring private detectives to go into resorts to look out for touts and Claims Management Companies (CMC’s) attempting to lure holidaymakers into making false claims. The net is tightening on the false sickness fraudsters but more still needs to be done.

Phil Ward, Managing Director of Jet2.com said: “As a family friendly airline and leading package holiday specialist we are determined that a small minority of people will not spoil things for the majority. We have taken an industry-leading stance on both of these issues and are consulting with Government on a way forward. It was a good opportunity to discuss these matters with Mr Sobel whilst also giving him a behind-the-scenes look at our busy operation during the height of the summer season. It was a very productive meeting and I thank Alex for his interest in both our business and the issues that we discussed.”
