Joining forces to stamp out false sickness claims

The campaign to eradicate the shameful business of fabricating false sickness claims against hotels and holiday companies received a huge boost this week.

After a meeting involving various officials and authorities from Majorca and the UK, an agreement to share intelligence has been reached, making it easier to take criminal action against touts and to enforce severe sanctions against companies involved in such activity.

A number of parties including the Mallorcan Hotel Federation, the Guardia Civil, the National Police Commissioner of Mallorca and the UK Ministry of Justice met with Jet2holidays to discuss the issue and to develop a strong and collaborative approach to tackling it.

As a result of this positive meeting, we are delighted to announce that intelligence on individuals engaged in touting and creating false sickness claims will now be shared by Mallorcan Police and the Guardia Civil with Europol, who will in turn pass data to the UK police and the Ministry of Justice.  This means that criminal cases can be pursued here in the UK, and the Ministry of Justice can use this information to take action against any claims management companies (CMC’s) or law firms engaged in this cynical and dishonest practice.

Alongside the Solicitors Regulation Authority recently announcing that it is ordering a number of law firms to prove how they have sourced claims, this new international approach to partnering up and tackling the issue is another welcome step in the right direction.

We hope to announce more similar cross-border partnerships soon and will continue to share updates. It is shameful that this cynical claims industry exists, and is allowing the UK to be known as the ‘fake sick man of Europe’. We will continue to do everything we can to stamp it out, and we are confident that news like this will see honesty prevail.
