26th January 2010

The friendly low fare airline finds a purrrfect new home for 13 lions in need

This month is set to be an unforgettable one for Jet2.com as we don our safari gear and embark on a unique mission that will bring us face to face with 13 lions! We’ve joined forces with Yorkshire Wildlife Park to schedule a one-off flight to rescue the lions which are being poorly treated in a Romanian Zoo.

The biggest big cat movement ever, the rescue mission marks a first for Jet2.com as we charter the special flight to Budapest to bring the lions back to the UK to be re-housed at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster. The big cats, which range in age from one to 27 years old, will be re-housed at a special 10-acre enclosure with freedom to roam and play.  Philip Meeson, Boss of Jet2.com said, “When we heard about the plight of the lions at the Romanian zoo, we immediately offered to provide a Jet2.com aircraft and the support of our highly trained staff free of charge to transport the big cats to their new home near Doncaster this February.” “As Yorkshire’s leading leisure airline, it’s a great honour to be involved in what is looking to be one of the biggest ever cat rescues”

Yorkshire Wildlife Park who has raised over have raised over £120,000 to cover the rescue costs but a further £30,000 is still needed for the on-going care of the animals. All donations are welcome, so if you would like to support the rescue please visit www.lionrescue.co.uk.
