Fowler Welch Explores the Changing Face of the Supply Chain

To kick off 2017, Fowler Welch is launching two new pieces of content to inform and support its customers and members of the supply chain.

The first to be launched is the latest in the series of Industry Insights videos which features Alex Edge of IGD discussing the efficiency developments across the supply chain. The second is the most recent white paper from Fowler Welch which delves into the technological developments in the supply chain and how businesses will need to adapt to benefit from them.

The video, an interview with Alex Edge, supply chain insight manager at IGD, addresses the current issues affecting the ambient supply chain and how new technologies are expected to impact the future of ambient.

In his interview, Alex Edge discusses the common misconceptions around the ambient supply chain, which is often mistakenly thought of as less sophisticated than fresh and chilled supply chains. Mr Edge also offers insight into technologies and practices such as RFID tagging, consolidation and innovative technologies such as drones and how these are being used to improve efficiencies and boost margins across the supply chain.

Speaking in the video, Alex Edge says: “Collaboration will be essential in the future supply chain. The market is in relatively slow growth so it’s getting harder to eke those one and two percent improvements out of the supply chain, so by collaborationg with retailers or service providers you can build those economies of scale and extract value from what exists within your businesses.”

The white paper, entitled The Supply Chain of the Future, focuses on technological developments made in recent years and how these have influenced consumer behaviour and expectations. The white paper addresses consumers’ ‘want it all’ attitude and how retailers are adopting new practices and inventing new technologies to meet these needs and capitalise on them.

The report suggests that those businesses not adapting their supply chain to shopper habits and retailers’ reactions to this will risk losing out to the competition.

Both pieces of content aim to offer suppliers an overview of the industry’s developments, as well as advice on how to develop existing and introduce new technologies to remain successful in an increasingly demanding and crowded market.
